In an industry often dominated by aesthetics, Julia Salas stands out as a highly sought-after expert. With her focus on sustainability and social inclusion, she revolutionized architecture and interior design. Her exemplary abilities and unique skills have made her a leader in her field, reshaping how the world views sustainable architecture.
Her journey began in Argentina, where her exposure to social issues during childhood fueled her passion for making a difference. Reflecting on her early life, Salas says: “I was always trying to lift everyone around me. My parents were dedicated to helping others, and that spirit of social responsibility stuck with me from a young age.”
After graduating with honors from the National University of La Plata in Buenos Aires, where she received the prestigious Dr. Joaquín V. González Award, Salas furthered her expertise with a master’s degree from the Florence Design Academy in Italy.
This diverse educational background has equipped her with cutting-edge design techniques and a global perspective on sustainable architecture.
Reflecting on this formative period, Salas shares: “It was in Florence where I first began to truly understand the importance of integrating sustainability into architecture. From that moment on, I knew that my career would focus on creating designs that are not only beautiful but environmentally responsible.”
This experience in Italy proved to be a turning point, shaping her future approach to sustainable design and setting the foundation for her exemplary career in the field.
As a LEED Green Associate, a globally recognised certification program developed by the U.S. Council, she brings a comprehensive understanding of sustainable building practices to every project.
Her architectural firm, Julia Salas LLC, based in Boca Raton, Florida, provides consultancy services that guide architects and designers in adopting sustainable practices. “We’re here to help architects and designers apply best practices in sustainability,” Salas notes. “Whether it’s through material selection, energy efficiency, or waste reduction, we aim to make sustainability an intrinsic part of every project.”
Salas’ exemplary abilities are evident in her innovative approach to sustainable materials. In her recent article, “Mushrooms, the Surprising Biomaterial That Revolutionizes the Industry Has Already Arrived in La Plata,” she explores the potential of mushroom mycelium as a revolutionary biomaterial in architecture and design, showcasing her forward-thinking mindset and ability to stay at the cutting edge of sustainable practices.
One of her standout projects involved advising an investor on a multi-million dollar property redevelopment. Her recommendation to rebuild using sustainable materials increased the property’s value from $12 million to $30 million and ensured long-term energy efficiency.
She also played a vital role in the innovative efforts to preserve Renaissance architecture during the Museo Novecento di Firenze renovation. Situated in Florence, Italy, at Michelozzo’s Hospital of San Paolo, the project reimagined the building to showcase its 20th-century Florentine art collections while thoughtfully honoring its historical heritage.
“It’s not just about the aesthetics,” Julia says. “It’s about long-term efficiency and ensuring that the building can operate sustainably for years.”
Matías José Busquets, President and Head of Engineering at Macafe S.A., attests to Salas’ exceptional abilities: “Ms. Salas demonstrated a strong understanding of industry standards, requirements, and guidelines. Her strong leadership, decision-making, analytical thinking, organization, and technical skills were evident in every project she undertook.”
While sustainability is one half of her equation, the other half is social inclusion. Through her second company, Drafts and Plans, Salas provides employment opportunities to marginalized women, training them in technical skills needed for architecture and design: “Many women face barriers to entering the workforce due to family responsibilities,” Salas explains. “We offer them remote work opportunities and train them in technical drawing and project assistance. It’s not just about giving them jobs but empowering them with skills to contribute to the economy.”
Her commitment to social impact extends beyond her own companies. Since 2019, she has been a driving force in the NGO Hecho por Nosotros, which holds consultative status with the UN ECOSOC. Under her leadership, the organization has participated in prestigious programs such as the Ashoka Globalizer — Dela Accelerator Program and the WISE Mentorship program, focusing on systemic change and promoting leadership among women entrepreneurs in STEM fields.
Daniel Kini, former Head of Design at the renowned Campana Brothers Studio, praises Salas’ unique skills: “Maria Julia demonstrated exceptional technical skills in visualization software, including Rhino, Photoshop, Autocad, and Vray. Her innovative thinking and responsible approach were evident in every project she undertook.”
Salas’ expertise has also been acknowledged through peer-reviewed publications. Her article “Constructions with a Positive Impact on the Environment and the People Who Live in Them” explores the intersection of sustainable building practices and human health, further cementing her status as a thought leader in the industry.
Julia is determined to continue pushing the boundaries of what architecture can achieve: “I believe that architecture is one of the most powerful tools we have to create a better world,” she says. “Whether through sustainable building practices or creating job opportunities for marginalized groups, I want my work to leave a lasting impact.”
With her unique blend of creativity, passion for sustainability, and dedication to social inclusion, she is designing not just buildings but a brighter, more equitable future. As a highly sought-after expert and leader in her field, she inspires and educates others through her workshops, seminars, and speaking engagements at international conferences.
She participated in panels at the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development, where she participated in ‘Weaving Wisdom, Building Futures: A Latin American Dialogue on Sustainability.’
Through her groundbreaking work, Julia proves that architecture can be a powerful force for change, helping to create a more sustainable and just world, one building at a time. Her exemplary abilities, unique skills, and visionary approach are reshaping the architecture industry and setting new standards for sustainability and social justice in design.
