A former Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Osun State, Mr Wale Adebayo, has commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for his safety initiative on the Olaiya Bridge, specifically the ban on heavy-duty trucks to prevent potential collapse and ensure public safety.
Recall that Governor Adeleke directed the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure on Monday to prohibit heavy-duty trucks from plying the bridge in the state capital.
Adebayo, who is also the Chairman of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), expressed gratitude to the governor for heeding their recent warnings about the neglected N2.7 billion Olaiya flyover constructed by former governor Adegboyega Oyetola.
He clarified that his criticisms of some policies by the governor were not driven by malicious intentions but rather by a desire to serve the collective interest of the people.
Adebayo emphasised the necessity of holding the government accountable to protect the interests of the public. He appealed to the state government to prioritise the maintenance of the bridge, citing concerns about vandalism.
While urging residents and other stakeholders to work together to maintain and support state infrastructure for future generations, he remarked, “It is disheartening to see that major components of the bridge are being vandalised by hoodlums, yet the government hasn’t deemed it fit to either replace them or arrest those responsible for the acts.”
“The Olaiya Bridge is an important project that required a significant investment, so the current government must ensure its protection,” Adebayo added.
