The Senator representing Benue North-West Senatorial District, Dr Titus Zam, on Tuesday condemned the persistent attacks and killings of people in Benue, especially in the Gwer-West Local Government Area, by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
Zam, in a statement on Tuesday made available to our correspondent while reacting to last week’s attack along the Makurdi-Naka Road, which claimed several lives, called on President Bola Tinubu and Governor Hyacinth Alia to intervene urgently to end the killings.
In the statement, the senator expressed dismay over what he termed deliberate and unprovoked attacks on the people of Gwer-West and Benue in general.
The statement said, “Despite our rigorous efforts, the killings persist. I condemn these deliberate and unprovoked attacks, particularly the most recent along the Makurdi-Naka Road.
“The open grazing prohibition and ranching establishment bill, which I presented before the Senate, is key to ending these killings.”
He extended his condolences to the affected communities and urged Tinubu and Alia to address the insecurity plaguing Benue.
He also called on security agencies to intensify their efforts to protect residents, especially vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly.
Multiple sources said not less than 500 residents of Gwer-West have been killed by suspected herdsmen attacks since 2011.
