Experts have charged journalists and students on Mass Communications to shift focus from negative news to reporting stories that inspire positive change and provide solutions to societal issues.
They made the charge during the Solutions Journalism Meetup that took place at Fountain University Osogbo, the capital of Osun State recently.
With the theme, “Telling Stories that Drive Change: Solutions Journalism for Sustainable Development,” the event was supported by the Nigeria Health Watch through the Solutions Journalism Network’s second phase of the Solutions Journalism Africa Initiative.
The facilitator of the programme, Dr. Adebiyi Rasheed, while speaking emphasized the need to move beyond mere problem reporting to highlight how people and communities are solving challenges.
He also stressed the negative impact of excessive negative news on mental health, noting that a constant stream of such stories can erode public optimism and contribute to anxiety.
Dr. Rasheed further explained the economic viability of solutions journalism, stating that journalists can earn significantly from producing stories that inspire action and change.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the College of Management and Social Sciences and the Head of the Department of Mass Communication at Fountain University, Dr. Raheemat Adeniran and Dr. Azeez Sanni, respectively, encouraged journalists to act as agents of change in society.
They emphasized the importance of focusing on solution journalism and urged journalists to refrain from solely reporting problems, as this can incite people and governments.
Speaking at a recent event, Dr. Adeniran emphasized the critical role journalists play in shaping public discourse and influencing societal change. “Journalists have the power to inspire positive transformation by highlighting solutions to societal problems,” she stated.
A lecturer of the department Mr Akeem Azeez also echoed this sentiment, cautioning against the dangers of sensationalized reporting. “Journalists must move beyond merely reporting problems and instead, focus on providing constructive solutions. This approach will empower the public and encourage policymakers to take action.”
Mr. Ahmad Amobi guided the attendees on how to pitch solutions-focused stories to media houses, providing insights into the types of stories that resonate with media outlets.
