Ahead of the burial of the first civilian governor of Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, former President of the Senate, Chief Ken Nnamani, has said that the revered politician lived and died to see a progressive and cohesive Nigeria.
The former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, died on April 11, 2024, and his remains would be laid to rest at his Uburu country home in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on November 9.
In a glowing tribute titled: “Honouring the legacy of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu- A life of service and patriotism, Nnamani said he was a distinguished statesman and patriot who consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment to a united and progressive Nigeria.
He stated that Onu’s contributions in politics, academics and other areas of life will continue to inspire future generations.
“As Abia State’s first civilian governor (1992-1993) and former Minister of Science and Technology (2015-2023), he consistently demonstrated his unwavering commitment to a united and progressive Nigeria.
“Dr. Onu was not only a leader but also a man of deep intellect, integrity, humility, and thoughtfulness. His forward-thinking ideas and passion for innovation left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. As an accomplished professor, engineer, and author, his contributions extended far beyond politics, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
“In the political arena, Dr. Onu played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s party politics. As national Chairman of the All Nigerian People’s Party (ANPP) in 2010, he led with vision and purpose, ultimately facilitating the historic 2013 merger that formed the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu’s legacy is one of dedication, service, and national pride. His absence leaves a void felt across the nation, but his life’s work will continue to inspire those striving for a better future for Nigeria,” Nnamani stated.
He prayed that God comforts his family and all who mourn his passing, declaring that his memory will forever remain blessed.
