The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has alleged that it paid N64 million to the Nigeria Police to release its members who were arrested before the conduct of the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
Arogidigba Global Journal reports that the state chairman of the party, Dr Anthony Aziegbemi, made the allegation at a press conference on Monday in Benin City.
According to him: “You will recall that the police were arresting our members on the false allegation of killing Inspector Akor.
“The police have shamelessly released our members after collecting about N64 million ostensibly for bail.
“Amazingly, more arrests have been made after the election. How low can the police go under this patently biased IGP heading the armed wing of the APC.”
Aziegbemi, also alleged that the party’s intelligence unit had uncovered plans by the APC to burn INEC office.
He said the purpose of the press conference was to alert security agencies about the alleged APC plan.
Meanwhile, efforts to get the Edo State Police Command to react to the allegation proved abortive as phone calls put across to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, were not answered.
He, however, responded to a text sent to his phone number, saying”Can’t talk now, please, text me.”
Arogidigba Global Journal also contacted on the Zone 5 Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tijani Momoh, who simply said “call the command PRO.”
