The Niger State House of Assembly has urged the executive arm of government to urgently provide intervention for the victims of recent flooding in Kwatachi Sabon Pegi in Mashegu and Nasarawa Kainji in Magama local government areas of the state.
This resolution was reached during the House’s plenary session on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, following a motion raised by Hon. Al Hassan Isah, the member representing Mashegu Constituency.
Hon. Al Hassan Isah informed the House that on August 29, 2024, the communities of Kwatachi and Nasarawa Kainji in Mashegu and Magama local government areas experienced heavy downpours. This resulted in the destruction of over 80 residential houses, hundreds of hectares of farmland being washed away, and three vehicles being submerged.
He expressed concern that vital means of livelihood, including several fish ponds, rice farms, and landed properties, were destroyed by the flood.
Furthermore, Hon. Isah highlighted that the bridge connecting Mashegu, Magama, Borgu, and Agwara LGAs in Niger State to Kaiama LGA in Kwara State had been damaged and required immediate repairs.
In response, the State House of Assembly called on the state government to mobilise manpower and resources to assist the affected internally displaced victims, ensuring they are not left homeless for an extended period without a source of income.
