An Abuja faith-based organisation (FBO), Al-Habibiyah Islamic Society (AIS), has called for accountability and transparency in the disbursement of cash and relief materials donated to bring succour to victims of flood that rocked Maiduguri, Borno State capital.
A release signed by the Society’s communication officer, Hajia Rafat Salami and made available to Tribune Online, said it has become necessary to checkmate the activities of dubious individuals who are in the habits of deliberately mismanaging funds meant to take care of victims during disaster.
While calling for swift action on the part of the state government under the leadership of Governor Babagana Zulum and other relevant stakeholders to expedite action in meeting the urgent needs of the victims, the statement called for collaboration that will bring immediate relief to those affected by the devastating flood taking into consideration the long-term recovery needs of the affected communities through sustainable rebuilding efforts.
“The Borno State Government says for the past two weeks of this unfortunate situation, Federal Government and other concerned stakeholders, generous individuals and organisations have made pledges, donations and contributed funds worth Twelve Billion Naira (N12, 000,000,000) Including (in addition non-cash donation of relief materials such as (food, medical and other essentials items) aimed at providing much-needed support for the flood victims.
“The Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society is committed to humanitarian efforts and the service of humanity. As a faith-based organization (FBO), we wish to emphasise the importance of accountability, transparency and effective disbursement of these funds to ensure that the victims receive adequate and prompt assistance.
“It is imperative that the funds be managed with the highest level of transparency and accountability to ensure that every contribution is used efficiently to address the immediate relief efforts, including food, shelter, and medical support for the victims. We advise the state government to carry along the private/NGO, Nigeria military and other relevant stakeholders in the disbursement of the funds and other non-cash relief items.
“As an organisation dedicated to serving humanity, we remain committed to standing by the people of Borno during this challenging time. We pledge our continued support and urge all concerned parties to act swiftly and compassionately in delivering relief to those in need.
“Al-Habibiyyah extends heartfelt its gratitude to all those who have generously contributed to this cause. Your donations are a testament to the spirit of compassion and solidarity within our community. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected,” the statement read.
