Women moved in huge numbers to the Local Government Council, Enugu State, portraying a peaceful protest that called on Governor Peter Mbah to ban masquerade activities in the vicinity.
The women protesters were seen with placards highlighting the masquerade’s negative impacts on the environment and how they were being deprived of their freedom of movement.
Mrs Benedict Ugwuoke, the protesters’ spokesperson, explained the masquerade’s unacceptable acts. Such as; public harassment, citizen intimidation, Incessant attacks and extortion by masquerades in Eha-Alumona.
The protesters also raised alarm over the use of dangerous weapons like guns, daggers and machetes on the citizens, causing havoc and problems in the community.
The protesters lamented how the masquerades blocked their way to their daily routine lives and businesses, raising a concern that if the situation persists, it would lead to hunger and hardship.
In response to the protest, Mrs Jacinta Ugwu who represented the Head of Personnel Management in Nsukka Local Council, commended the women for their peaceful conduct and assured them that their request would be forwarded to the administrator for immediate action.
