A religious group, Heal Our Land Oh Lord, has called on stakeholders in Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State to take actions that will ensure a credible election.
The leader of the group, which is a global prayer initiative, Apostle Alfred Odion Uyinosa, while addressing journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, said: “As we approach the day of the election, we urge all indigenes of Edo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, political parties, and other relevant stakeholders to exercise their respective constitutional roles in promoting sustainable good governance.
“Even in the midst of all the rhetoric, we have seen a lot of issue-based campaigns ahead of Saturday’s election. No matter how we look at it, elections in Nigeria seem to be like war, which also places a burden on us to control and manage the process to be free of chaos and bloodshed.
“Every Edo State indigene, irrespective of party affiliation, religion, or other differences, must imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship. INEC must live up to expectations by conducting a credible, fair, and transparent election in Edo State. Its performance will help mitigate the controversies surrounding past elections.”
Uyinosa, who endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki, said the state needs continuity in what the current administration has started to make it a destination for investors.
“I want him to win and continue with what Obaseki has done. He has accomplished great work in Edo State, from civil service reform to primary healthcare delivery, educational reform, and payment of the minimum wage, among others, which have positioned the state as one of the best in the country,” he said.
